Selenium is a chemical element with the symbol Se and atomic number 34. It is a metalloid, meaning it has properties of both metals and nonmetals. Here are some of its properties and uses:
  • AppearanceSelenium can appear as a red powder, a vitreous black solid, or a gray metallic form. The gray metallic form is the most stable under normal conditions.
  • Electrical conductivitySelenium's electrical conductivity increases when exposed to light. This property makes it useful in photocells, solar cells, and photocopiers.
  • UsesSelenium is used in electronics, pigments, and glass. It is also used to make ceramics, paint, and plastics.
  • Other propertiesSelenium has a melting point of 494K and a boiling point of 958K. It has a density of 4.81g/cm^3. Selenium burns in air, but is unaffected by water. It dissolves in concentrated nitric acid and alkalis.
  • OriginThe name selenium comes from the Greek word selene, which means "moon". It was discovered in 1817 by Swedish chemists Jons Jacob Berzelius and Johann Gottlieb Gahn.
  • SourceSelenium is mainly a by-product of copper refining. It is rarely found in pure elemental form or as pure ore in Earth's crust
