Silica ramming mass (SRM) is a refractory material used in the lining of induction furnaces for melting steel, cast iron, and cast steel. It's also known as acidic ramming mass or mix. SRM is made from a blend of silica grains, a binder, and other components, and is characterized by its thermal stability, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance: 
  • CompositionSRM is made from silicon carbide (SiC), silica (SiO2), aluminum oxide (Al2O3), and iron oxide (Fe2O3). 
  • ProductionSRM is produced by chemically reacting carbonaceous material with molten metal. The mixture is then cooled, crushed, and ground into fine particles. 
  • PropertiesSRM can withstand temperatures of up to 1700°C, expands very little, and is resistant to thermal shocks. It also has a tendency to expand at around 800°C, which creates a compact lining that resists erosion and corrosion. 
  • BenefitsSRM's quality directly affects the furnace's heating performance. A high-quality lining results in better metallurgical control, optimum output, and smoother furnace operation. 
SRM is usually packaged in HDPE bags, jumbo bags, or paper bags. The bags should not be stored for more than six months
