Ferro manganese is a ferromagnetic alloy of iron and manganese that's used in the production of steel and other metal alloys:
  • CompositionFerro manganese is typically 65–90% iron and 15–25% manganese. The proportions of these elements determine the properties of the alloy.
  • UsesFerro manganese is used in the production of steel, stainless steel, and manganese-rich steel. It's also used in welding electrodes and other products like screws, nails, bolts, and bearings.
  • PropertiesFerro manganese improves the strength, hardness, toughness, and hardenability of steel. It also acts as a deoxidizer and combines with sulfur to improve hot-working properties.
  • ProductionFerro manganese is produced through smelting processes from manganese ores. The most common production methods are the ball mill process, direct reduction process, and electric furnace process.
  • TypesThere are different types of ferro manganese, including high carbon ferromanganese (HCFeMn), medium carbon ferromanganese (MCFeMn), and low carbon ferromanganese (LCFeMn). LCFeMn is mostly used in the welding industry.

Ferro niobium (FeNb) is an alloy of iron and niobium that's used to strengthen and increase the toughness of steel alloys:
  • Composition: Ferro niobium contains 60–70% niobium.
  • Uses: It's the main alloying agent for high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel, and is also used in stainless steel. Ferro niobium is used in many applications, including automotive bodies, oil and gas pipelines, railroad tracks, and ship hulls.
  • Manufacturing: Ferro niobium is made in an electric furnace using the aluminothermy method. The process involves mixing niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5) with iron oxide and aluminum, and then reducing the mixture in an aluminothermic reaction.
  • Producers: The largest producers of ferro niobium are located in Brazil and Canada.
